On the morning of July 7, 2026, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old man from Mexico, was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Houston, Texas. Salgado Araujo was driving his work van with his brother and two co-workers to a construction job when the encounter with federal agents occurred. For 35 years, he had been living in the United States, where he built a life with his wife and their three sons and ran a small construction business.
His family described him as a hardworking man dedicated to giving his family the American dream, and he was in the process of regularizing his immigration status with no criminal record.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are contested. According to ICE, agents were conducting a "targeted enforcement operation" when they attempted to stop Salgado Araujo's vehicle. The agency alleges that he evaded the stop, rammed an ICE vehicle, and attempted to run over an officer, which prompted an agent to fire in self-defense. However, Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the operation. An attorney for the three men in the van with Salgado Araujo stated that the van was not used to ram the agents' vehicle and that the officers' lives were not in danger. The family also disputes the official account, suggesting that Salgado Araujo may have been frightened by the unmarked vehicles and feared he was being targeted for a robbery of his work tools.
Following the shooting, which occurred around 6:50 a.m. on Canal Street, Salgado Araujo was transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Harris County Medical Examiner later ruled his death a homicide, with the cause being a "penetrating gunshot wound of the torso". The three men who were with Salgado Araujo were taken into custody by ICE. The incident has drawn significant public attention and calls for an independent and transparent investigation from his family, civil rights groups, and elected officials. It was confirmed that the ICE officers involved were not wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. As of now, there have been no arrests, charges, or convictions announced in relation to the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and the case remains under investigation.
