On September 12, 2002, 22-year-old Samantha Renee Patrick was last seen at the Flying J Travel Plaza located off Interstate 40 and Morgan Road in Oklahoma. The following day, her body was discovered behind an Albertsons grocery store in Yukon. An investigation revealed that the young female had sustained multiple stab wounds to her neck and upper torso.
Authorities determined that there were no indications of a struggle or sexual assault at the scene where she was found, leading them to believe she had been killed at a different location before her body was abandoned. At the time of her death, Samantha was known to frequent the truck stop where she was last seen alive and also worked as a dancer in local establishments.
The investigation into Samantha's homicide led authorities to consider two individuals as primary suspects: John Robert Williams, who would later be known as the "truck stop killer," and his girlfriend, Rachel Cumberland. Despite being named as suspects in this case, no charges were ever formally filed against either Williams or Cumberland for their alleged involvement in Samantha Patrick's death. The case grew cold, leaving Samantha's family without answers and her killer or killers not held accountable for the crime. Her aunt publicly stated in 2004 that she believed her niece was a fighter and that evidence pointing to her killer would likely be found on her body.
While justice has remained elusive for Samantha, both suspects faced legal consequences for other violent crimes. Williams and Cumberland were both charged in connection with the 2002 murder of a young woman in Mississippi. Williams is currently serving a life sentence for that crime and has reportedly confessed to the murders of over thirty women. He is also suspected in the disappearance and death of another Oklahoma City woman. Rachel Cumberland was released from prison in 2013 after serving time for her role in the Mississippi murder. The murder of Samantha Patrick officially remains an unsolved cold case, a source of ongoing pain for her family who are still awaiting a resolution and for the person responsible for her violent death to be brought to justice.
