Rita M. Galyas, a 69-year-old woman from Olmsted Falls, Ohio, died on May 27, 2026, after a domestic violence incident turned into a deadly shooting and standoff near Bagley Road and Brentwood Drive. She had lived in Olmsted Falls for decades, after being born in Garfield Heights, and had retired in 2025 from A & F Machine Products Company. The violence unfolded late Wednesday afternoon when police were called to the area just before 6 p.m. for reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Rita critically wounded outside the residence. Investigators later identified the armed suspect as 47-year-old Jamie L. McFarland, Rita’s son. Police said McFarland had barricaded himself inside the home, turning the scene into an hourslong standoff that drew SWAT officers, drones, tactical vehicles, and flashbangs into what neighbors described as a normally quiet neighborhood.
A 64-year-old woman, identified by police as McFarland’s ex-girlfriend and the homeowner, escaped from the house and ran to a nearby residence for help. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, then later released. In a 911 call reported by local media, the woman said McFarland had held her captive at gunpoint for about 26 hours. She told dispatchers that his mother had come over and that McFarland shot her in the backyard.
