In the early hours of June 1, 2026, the life of 33-year-old Lavonta Churchill Jr. was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in the Old Louisville neighborhood. Known to some as “Ray Jay” and to others as “Vonta,” Churchill was remembered for an infectious smile that could illuminate any room and a deep, unwavering love for his family. Born and raised in Louisville, he had recently returned to Kentucky after spending several years in Arizona with his grandmother.
A passionate football player in his youth, he was a two-time All-Star for the Yellow Jackets, leaving behind a legacy of talent and sportsmanship. His sudden death left a void in the hearts of his parents, four children, six siblings, and a wide circle of family and friends who cherished him.
The incident that claimed Churchill's life was a triple shooting that unfolded at approximately 1:15 a.m. in the 100 block of West Oak Street. When Louisville Metro Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. A third victim, a woman who had also been shot, was located nearby in the 500 block of West St. Catherine Street; her injuries were believed to be connected to the same event. All three victims were transported to UofL Hospital, where Churchill and the other man, identified as 32-year-old Devante Shields, were initially listed in critical condition. Tragically, both men succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The female victim was expected to survive.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the double homicide.
