Gavin Zacharey Price, a 22-year-old male from Rapid City, South Dakota, died on June 4, 2026, after a shooting at an apartment complex on Palm Drive. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours, when Rapid City police were called to a residence in the 3300 block of Palm Drive around 12:30 a.m. for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man in the parking lot who was identified as the suspected shooter, while inside the apartment they discovered Price, who had died from
his injuries.
Police identified the suspected shooter as Christopher Tromp, 21, of Rapid City. Officers detained Tromp at the scene and later took him to the Public Safety Building for questioning. After detectives interviewed him, Tromp was arrested on a charge of first-degree manslaughter. Authorities said the case remained active and ongoing after the arrest.
Tromp made an initial court appearance the morning after the shooting. A judge set his bond at $750,000 cash only, and reporting from the courtroom described family members as visibly distraught as they heard that Tromp could face life in prison if convicted. At the time of the available reports, a preliminary hearing date had not yet been set.
Outside of the criminal case, Price was remembered by loved ones as Gavin Zacharey Price, born July 25, 2003.
