In the early hours of May 2, 2026, the life of 18-year-old Tyler Huddleston was tragically cut short in a barrage of gunfire on the southwest side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Huddleston was attending his cousin's birthday party at a residence in the 2500 block of S. 62nd Street. The house had been a source of concern for neighbors, who had made numerous calls to the police about suspected drug activity and other disturbances in the years prior.
The celebration turned fatal when an argument erupted, reportedly over a smashed cellphone, setting in motion a chain of events that would end in senseless violence.
The dispute involved two men, 20-year-old Joseph Mangert and 18-year-old Daniel Martinez-Labra, who had arrived at the party to pick up a 14-year-old girl who had been asked to leave. Following the argument with Huddleston, the two men left, only to return wearing ski masks. It was then that Mangert allegedly opened fire with an automatic handgun, firing at least 20 rounds. Huddleston was struck by multiple bullets and was pronounced dead at the scene in the kitchen of the home. The violent act was captured on nearby surveillance cameras, which recorded the sound of the automatic gunfire and showed a vehicle registered to Mangert at the scene.
In the wake of the shooting, the Milwaukee police launched an investigation, utilizing the video evidence and witness statements to identify the suspects. Shortly after, Daniel Martinez-Labra was arrested and taken into custody. An arrest warrant was issued for Joseph Mangert, who remained at large. Both men were charged with first-degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, and party to a crime, facing the possibility of more than 60 years in prison if convicted. The case cast a spotlight on the ongoing issues at the "problem house" and left a community grappling with the violent loss of a young man who was described by his family as having a strong work ethic and dreams of starting his own business.
