In the late afternoon of May 16, 2026, a dispute involving juveniles at a residence on Magnolia Terrace in Monroe, Georgia, took a tragic turn. During the altercation, 40-year-old Lakisey Branch was shot in the leg. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 2:32 p.m., and Branch was airlifted to a hospital in the Athens area for medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries four days later, on May 20.
The Monroe Police Department responded swiftly to the incident, and on the same day as the shooting, they located and took a 14-year-old male suspect into custody. Following the death of Lakisey Branch, the teenager was charged as an adult with a string of serious offenses. These charges include felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and tampering with evidence. Additionally, he faces charges of possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree. The suspect is currently being held at the Rockdale Youth Detention Center.
