In the fading daylight of March 30, 2026, in Alexander City, Alabama, 20-year-old Rafiel Riggins was fatally shot. He was in a vehicle with 19-year-old Fitzgerald Wilson, who also died in the incident.
The Alexander City Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle being shot into at the intersection of Third Street and 10th Avenue in the Avondale area around 12:57 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered both Riggins and Wilson inside the vehicle, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. News of the double homicide quickly spread, prompting a swift investigation and a plea to the public for information, with CrimeStoppers offering a $2,000 reward for any tips that would lead to an arrest.
The investigation led to the arrests of two brothers on Friday, April 3, 2026. Markeis Diquon Smart, 22, of Dadeville, and Jordan Hakeim Smart, 19, of Alexander City, were taken into custody and both were charged with two counts of capital murder. Specifically, they were charged with the capital murder of persons in a vehicle. Following their arrest, they were transported to the Tallapoosa County Jail to await a bond hearing.
