Alonzo Johnson, 42, was killed on April 2, 2026, after violence erupted inside the lobby of a Kenwood apartment building on Chicago’s South Side. Johnson was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex in the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard, the same block where he lived, and the shooting unfolded around 5:30 p.m. after what authorities described as an argument with a resident of the building.
Police said officers responded to the building at about 5:35 p.m.
and found Johnson in the lobby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He had been shot in the left hand, right shoulder, and chest. The confrontation, according to a witness cited in a police report, began when a building resident became involved in an argument with Johnson, then returned to the lobby and opened fire.
Johnson was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, but the damage from the shooting proved fatal. The Cook County medical examiner’s office reported that he died at the hospital at 8:06 p.m., only a few hours after the gunfire. Online memorial records also identify him as having been lost to gun violence that same day in Chicago.

The suspected shooter was described only as a resident of the apartment building who fled after the shooting, and police said that person was not in custody.
