Terrell James Haggins, a 17-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on April 10, 2019, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. near the intersection of St. Louis Avenue and Ohio Street. Terrell was a former senior at Legal Prep Charter High School. On the day of the shooting, Terrell and three other individuals were standing on a corner near a known drug market when two gunmen exited a vehicle and opened fire on the group.
The gunmen fled the scene in a stolen light-colored Honda Accord, leaving behind at least 30 shell casings.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of Terrell James Haggins and Ismael Moore, a 19-year-old African American male. Terrell was chased onto Ohio Street, where he fell and was shot several times in the face and head by one of the gunmen. The incident was captured by POD cameras, which also recorded the stolen vehicle used in the attack. The car was later located, and two cellphones were found in the back seat. These cellphones contained texts and videos that showed the three shooters driving around with guns before the murders.
The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Larryon Brown, LaDarius Howard, and Cornelius Valentine. Larryon Brown, who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, was charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm. He was arrested while in custody at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center for a separate armed robbery charge. LaDarius Howard and Cornelius Valentine, both 19 years old, were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm in August 2020. The suspects were held without bail and were due back in court for further proceedings.
The shooting was part of a spate of violence in the Harrison police district connected to ongoing gang conflict. The investigation also revealed additional conversations between the three shooters through a social media app, which further implicated them in the crime. The case highlights the tragic impact of gang violence on the lives of young individuals in Chicago.
