In the early evening of April 8, 2026, a dispute at the Nova North Apartments in Northeast Austin turned fatal, claiming the life of 19-year-old Tyrell Robinson. Austin Police Department officers were dispatched to the apartment complex located at 12435 Dessau Road at approximately 6:49 p.m. following multiple reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Robinson with a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate medical aid from officers, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Austin Fire Department personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:13 p.m.
The investigation into Robinson's death quickly revealed a complex situation involving five individuals, including three juveniles. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Robinson on the ground, and they were able to provide a description of a person believed to be the shooter and the direction in which he fled. Shortly after, police located a man matching the description nearby, who was identified as 19-year-old Chance Young. Young was taken into custody. The ongoing investigation further identified 17-year-old Drevon Slaughter and three juveniles as also being involved in the incident.
According to police, the events leading to the shooting stemmed from a "failed transaction. " Two juveniles had reportedly arranged to sell a gun to Robinson. During this transaction, Young allegedly brandished a gun and attempted to take the weapon without payment. A struggle ensued, and one of the juveniles told investigators he fired multiple shots at Robinson, fearing for his life. Young reportedly fled the scene, leaving his shoes and cellphone behind. He was initially arrested for murder, but his charge was later changed to aggravated assault. Drevon Slaughter was also arrested in connection with the shooting. Both Young and Slaughter were no longer in custody after Young posted a $15,000 bond. Charges against the three juveniles involved are pending. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Austin Police Department.
