In the evening hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, a burst of violence in the University City area of Charlotte, North Carolina, set in motion a tragic chain of events. At approximately 8:30 p.m., police responded to a call for an assault with a deadly weapon in the 100 block of East McCullough Drive. Arriving at the scene, which was later identified as a motel parking lot, officers discovered 38-year-old Virgil Leroy Hardeman Jr. suffering from gunshot wounds.
