In the summer of 2009, a wave of violence troubled the city of Buffalo, New York. On the night of Thursday, July 9th, 27-year-old Markell J. Lewis, a Black male, was shot and killed. He was sitting in his vehicle on Crossman Avenue, in the Schiller Park neighborhood, when the fatal incident occurred around 11 p.m. His death marked the beginning of a particularly violent 15-hour period in the city, during which two other men were also fatally shot in separate incidents.
