In a burst of daylight gunfire that shattered the afternoon calm, 14-year-old Tyale Coates was killed on April 14, 2026, in Northeast Washington, D.C. The shooting took place just before 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE, outside a Circle 7 Express convenience store. Tyale, an 8th-grade student at KIPP DC Valor Academy, was with a group of other young people when two individuals approached and began shooting into the crowd.
He was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
The hail of bullets also struck 12-year-old Mhilo Young, a former student at the same academy. Mhilo was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The loss of the two boys, both cherished members of their school community, sent a wave of grief and shock through the city. Family, friends, and neighbors were left to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss of two young lives.
The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the double homicide. Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack on the group, though it remains unclear if Tyale and Mhilo were the intended victims. As of now, the security cameras at the convenience store were reportedly not working at the time of the incident, leaving investigators without video footage of the shooting or the suspects. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward and are offering a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the gunmen, who remain at large. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
