The following day, on August 23, 1990, a security guard on patrol discovered Atkinson's car in a desolate cul-de-sac.
This grim finding led to a wider search of the area, which was known locally as a "Lovers' Lane."
The search uncovered a horrific scene. The body of Cheryl Henry was found; she had been sexually assaulted and her throat had been cut. Not far away, Andy Atkinson was found tied to a tree, having suffered similar fatal injuries to his neck that were so severe he was nearly decapitated. The brutality of the murders sent a shockwave through the community and launched a massive investigation involving both Houston Police and the FBI. For years, detectives pursued leads and interviewed potential persons of interest, but the case eventually went cold, leaving the families of the victims without answers.
For nearly thirty-six years, the "Lovers' Lane Murders" remained one of Houston's most infamous unsolved cases. This new information, combined with advances in DNA testing, allowed authorities to connect Parrott to the crime scene. In March 2026, police arrested 64-year-old Floyd William Parrott in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was subsequently charged with capital murder in the deaths of Andy Atkinson and Cheryl Henry. Investigators revealed that DNA evidence from the 1990 crime scene was matched to Parrott, who at the time of the murders was 28 years old and had a prior history of impersonating a police officer. Parrott now awaits extradition to Texas to face trial for the decades-old murders.
