In the early hours of August 5, 2009, Joseph Lovett, a 25-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Buffalo, New York. The incident, which also resulted in the death of 19-year-old Jamie Norton, unfolded outside a residence at 72 Hirschbeck Street in the Broadway-Bailey neighborhood. Lovett, a father to a young son, was visiting family and was leaving when the shooting occurred. The gunfire erupted around 2 a.m., leaving a scene of violence that claimed two lives and wounded three other individuals.
The three survivors of the attack were identified as Lawanda Strozier, 27, who was listed in serious condition; Kimberly Caldwell, 20, in fair condition; and Joseph Cole, 29, who was treated and released. The deaths of Lovett and Norton marked the 33rd and 34th homicides in Buffalo that year. The motive behind the shooting remains a point of contention. Law enforcement officials initially suggested that the violence may have stemmed from an attempted robbery that had gone awry. However, a relative of Lovett presented a different theory, speculating that the shooting was a targeted "hit." This family member believed the intended victim may have been Jamie Norton, who had reportedly testified before a grand jury in connection with another murder case.
Despite the passage of time, the case of the double homicide of Joseph Lovett and Jamie Norton remains unsolved. No arrests have been made in connection with the killings, and the assailants remain unknown. In an effort to generate new leads, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $9,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The Buffalo Police Department continues to investigate the cold case, hoping for a breakthrough that will bring closure to the families of the victims.
