On the evening of March 16, 2026, a violent altercation in the serene community of Fallbrook, California, claimed the life of 40-year-old Martin Lucas Esteban, a hardworking landscaper and immigrant from Guatemala. The incident, which unfolded around 8 p.m. in the 3800 block of E. Mission Road, stemmed from a heated argument that escalated with tragic consequences.
Deputies from the Fallbrook Sheriff's Substation were dispatched to the scene following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon their arrival, they discovered two men suffering from traumatic injuries. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the deputies and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical personnel, Martin Lucas succumbed to a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man, who was with Lucas, was also shot and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which he was expected to survive.
The investigation led by the San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit swiftly identified a suspect. Michael Anthony Burke, a 70-year-old resident of Fallbrook, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The confrontation reportedly occurred while Lucas and his colleague were in their vehicle. An argument between the men and Burke preceded the shooting.
Burke was subsequently booked into the Vista Detention Facility and has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. During his court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is currently being held without bail as the legal proceedings continue.
