In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Jasiah TyShawn Smith was tragically cut short. On February 25, 2026, at approximately 12:36 a.m., police were called to a residence in the 1200 block of 29th Street. Inside, they found Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
Known to his loved ones by several nicknames, including "Noodle," "Boug," and "Bubba," Jasiah was
described as a lovable and compassionate young man who was the oldest of six siblings. He had attended both Stafford County and Hampton City Public Schools and worked in landscaping. His family remembered him as someone who loved listening to music, dancing, roller skating, and fishing. He was known to have taken on the role of the man of the house at a young age, deeply loving and protecting his family.
The investigation into Smith's death quickly progressed, and on Monday, March 2, 2026, an arrest was made. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, the Newport News Police Department took 19-year-old Jahkri Tysheek Wilson into custody without incident.
Wilson has been charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew commented on the swift arrest, crediting the diligent work of his officers and detectives, as well as the support of the community and the city's investment in technology. While an arrest has been made, the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
