On the evening of May 17, 2025, 32-year-old Dreshaun Lamarr Pruden, a Black male from Newport News, Virginia, was fatally shot inside a Family Fare convenience store located at a BP gas station on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. Police responded to a call around 9:20 p.m. and discovered Pruden on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Known affectionately as 'Dre' and 'Boomane,' Pruden was a graduate of Heritage High School and had continued his education to become an electrician. At the time of his death, he was also attending barber school and was known for his strong work ethic, holding one full-time and three part-time jobs. He was a father who cherished spending time with his children, family, and friends.
The investigation into Pruden's death was swift, aided by surveillance footage from the convenience store and tips from the community. The footage captured two men watching Pruden as he entered the store. The men briefly exited, returned to their vehicle, and then went back inside the store, where one of them lunged at Pruden. As Pruden retreated, both men drew firearms. The video showed one of the assailants shooting Pruden before both fled the scene. A license plate reader later identified their vehicle, leading investigators to the suspects.
Within days of the shooting, the first suspect was in custody. On May 20, 2025, police arrested 39-year-old Tony Jermaine Tynes. He was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The second suspect, 40-year-old Marvin Redding, was apprehended on August 5, 2025, in Newark, Delaware, by U.S. Marshals and a SWAT team. Redding was extradited back to Virginia on August 12 and faced charges of first-degree murder, grand larceny, robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in a public place. Court proceedings for Redding were expected to begin in September. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew expressed hope that the arrests would bring some comfort to Pruden's family as they seek justice.
