On the morning of November 29, 2025, shoppers at the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News, Virginia, witnessed a tragic turn of events that resulted in the death of 26-year-old male Diamante Tre’veon Neal. The incident occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. inside a store known as New Square, located near The Children's Place. According to witnesses and surveillance footage later reviewed by investigators, Neal entered the establishment and was approached by another individual, sparking a verbal
argument that quickly escalated into a physical struggle. During the tussle, the confrontation turned deadly when a firearm was introduced, leading to multiple gunshots ringing out in the busy shopping center on what was a bustling post-Holiday weekend.
Responding officers arrived at the scene to find Neal suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. A nurse who happened to be shopping nearby attempted to perform CPR on the victim before emergency responders could transport him to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Neal succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 11:30 a.m. The mall was subsequently closed for the remainder of the day as police secured the scene and launched an investigation into the isolated incident, which authorities determined stemmed from a personal dispute rather than a random act of violence.
Police quickly identified and arrested a suspect, Gary Carlton Moore III, in connection with the shooting. Moore, who was taken into custody shortly after the event, allegedly claimed self-defense during questioning. Court documents revealed that Moore stated Neal had threatened him, leading to a physical altercation where Moore reportedly disarmed Neal. However, investigators noted that video evidence appeared to show Moore firing at Neal multiple times as the victim was retreating from the struggle. Moore was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling, and felony carrying a concealed weapon.
