In the early morning hours of July 2, 2015, a dispute at an Exxon gas station at 15th and State streets in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, ended in the tragic death of Christopher J. Williams. Williams, a 34-year-old Black / African American male, had gone inside to pay and was shot in the chest upon returning outside around 2:15 a.m. Those who knew him described him as a wonderful father, son, brother, and friend.
A makeshift memorial was later placed at the scene of the shooting by grieving friends and family.
The Harrisburg police launched an immediate investigation into the homicide. Their efforts, which included reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station, quickly led to a suspect. Within just 22 hours of the shooting, investigators had apprehended DeAndre Chism in connection with the murder of Christopher Williams.
The swift arrest brought some measure of resolution to a community shaken by the sudden violence. The incident highlighted ongoing concerns about gun violence in the city and prompted calls from the community for non-violent methods of conflict resolution. The loss of Christopher J. Williams served as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such acts have on the victim's loved ones and the broader community.
