In the afternoon hours of April 18, 2025, the life of 39-year-old Barney Kittles Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of 35th Street around 3:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Kittles suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Barney Kittles Jr.
succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by 4:39 p.m. that same day.
Known affectionately as 'Debo' to his loved ones, Barney Kittles Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 27, 1984. He was a father, son, and brother who was deeply cherished by his family and friends. In the wake of his death, an outpouring of grief was expressed by the community, with many sharing their condolences and support for his mourning family.
The investigation into the shooting death of Barney Kittles Jr. proceeded, and initially, police reported that there was no suspect information available. However, their efforts led to a significant development in the case. On April 28, 2025, Newport News police announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting.
Montra Christopher Carter, a 29-year-old resident of Newport News, was taken into custody in Hampton with the assistance of the Hampton Police Division and the U.S. Marshals Service. Carter has been charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The arrest brought a measure of progress in the quest for justice for Barney Kittles Jr. and his grieving family.
