In the quiet town of Carrollton, Kentucky, a family was irrevocably fractured on the evening of March 5, 2026. Stephan Burgin, a 32-year-old man, was found with a fatal gunshot wound at a residence on New Castle Pike. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office received a call around 8:30 p.m. about an unresponsive male and upon arrival, deputies discovered Burgin, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death swiftly pointed to a suspect within the family circle.
The following day, law enforcement arrested Stephan's younger brother, 25-year-old Jessie James Burgin, in connection with the shooting. The preliminary investigation indicated that Stephan had been shot by his brother.
Jessie James Burgin was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including murder with a domestic violence enhancement, theft of a firearm, fleeing or evading police, and tampering with physical evidence. He was taken into custody and lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center as the investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office continues. The case involved the assistance of the Carrollton Police Department, a Kentucky State Police detective, and the Coroner's Office.
