A promising life was tragically cut short on the evening of March 7, 2026, when 19-year-old Janea Elizabeth Osier of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, was killed. The young woman, a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, was known by loved ones as a free spirit with a passion for traveling and riding motorcycles. She was also a devoted animal lover, especially to her dog, Nova.
At the time of her death, Janea was working as a car detailer in Burlington.
The incident that claimed Janea's life unfolded at Chavy's Bar and Grill on Agency Street in Burlington. Police were called to the scene at approximately 11:20 p.m. for a report of a person who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered Janea with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on March 8, 2026. An autopsy was scheduled with the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner for March 10.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched by the Burlington Police Department. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 22-year-old Kaysean A. Rice of Mount Pleasant. Rice was located and taken into custody by the Mount Pleasant Police Department. He has since been charged with second-degree murder, reckless use of a firearm, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. It was also noted that Rice had an active warrant for a no-contact order violation at the time of the incident. He is currently being held at the Des Moines County Correctional Center without bond. Authorities have stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Janea's death remains ongoing.
