On the evening of Valentine's Day in Jacksonville, Illinois, a tragedy unfolded that would cut short the life of 31-year-old Marcquila Harris. Just before 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026, police received reports of gunshots in the 800 block of West Chambers Street. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Harris with a life-threatening gunshot wound. She was quickly transported to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she died later that evening.
The investigation into Harris's death was swift, involving Jacksonville police, Illinois State Police, and the Morgan County Sheriff's and Coroner's offices. Believing it to be an isolated incident, investigators worked through the night to identify a person of interest. Their efforts led them to 23-year-old Marissa Teubner, also of Jacksonville. The day after the shooting, Teubner presented herself at the police department and was subsequently arrested in connection with the death of Marcquila Harris.
Following her arrest, the Morgan County State's Attorney's Office filed formal charges against Marissa Teubner, including three counts of first-degree murder and a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm. During her initial court appearance, Teubner was appointed a public defender. A judge granted the prosecution's request that she remain in custody at the Morgan County jail pending trial. A preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for early March. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet released any details regarding a possible motive for the shooting.
