In the quiet community of Joliet, Illinois, a tragedy unfolded on the morning of January 25, 2026, ending the life of 36-year-old Joselynn Diaz-Garcia. A mother, she was found unresponsive in the backyard of her residence on Garnsey Avenue, the victim of an apparent homicide. Alongside her was her 4-year-old son, Gianni Reyes, who had also been fatally shot.
The grim discovery was made after police responded to multiple 911 calls from concerned neighbors who reported hearing gunshots.
The initial investigation pointed towards a domestic disturbance. Joliet Police Chief William Evans indicated that there appeared to be some sort of domestic relationship between the victim and the man believed to be responsible for the deaths. A person of interest was quickly identified as Joseph D. Johnson, a 29-year-old who was described as a part-time resident of the house. He was found at the scene with what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his ankle.
In the days that followed, the investigation progressed swiftly. While hospitalized under police guard at Loyola University Medical Center, Joseph D. Johnson was formally charged with six counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Joselynn Diaz-Garcia and her young son. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation as the community mourns the loss of a mother and child. Following his release from the hospital, Johnson is expected to be transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility to await further legal proceedings.
