On a winter morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 15-year-old Cameron Kilpatrick, his 13-year-old brother Michael Kilpatrick, and their mother, Jacqueline Neill, were found shot to death in their home on Worden Street on January 27, 2026. The tragedy unfolded after a distressed 911 call was made by their mother's fiancé, 44-year-old Charles Broomfield, at approximately 7:40 a.m.
Initially, Broomfield told investigators a fabricated story of a home invasion.
He claimed that two intruders had entered the house, one of whom held him and his 5-year-old son at gunpoint in an upstairs bedroom while he heard gunshots downstairs. He alleged the second intruder then took his own gun from an unlocked box and, after Broomfield pleaded for his and his son's lives, the intruders fled. However, investigators quickly noted inconsistencies in his account. There were no footprints in the snow to indicate a break-in, and medical personnel determined the victims had been deceased for some time before the 911 call was made.
Faced with the contradictory evidence, Broomfield’s story crumbled, and he reportedly confessed to the killings. He was arrested and has since been charged with three counts of premeditated murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. During his virtual court arraignment, he was denied bond.
The community has been left reeling from the senseless act of violence. Family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Cameron, Michael, and Jacqueline, sharing stories and mourning their loss. Cameron was remembered by his classmates at Kenowa Hills High School as a dedicated clarinet player in the marching band who had grown from a shy freshman into a more confident individual. The family expressed their profound devastation, describing the loss as a senseless act of violence that has left them utterly heartbroken.
