In the early hours of Saturday, January 31, 2026, the life of 19-year-old Joshua Soden of McPherson, Kansas, was tragically cut short. The fatal incident unfolded on a rural road in McPherson County, southwest of Inman, following a disagreement that began at a house party where alcohol had been consumed.
Following the initial dispute at the party, two groups of attendees left in separate pickup trucks.
They later met on a rural road near 4th Avenue and Arapaho Road, approximately two miles from the party. A physical altercation then broke out between Soden and an 18-year-old male. During this fight, Soden was shot. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 18-year-old male involved in the altercation immediately called 911 to report the shooting. He then drove to the Inman Police Department, where he was questioned by authorities. As of early February 2026, he has not been arrested. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting the McPherson County Sheriff's Office in the ongoing homicide investigation.
Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and are looking into the possibility that the shooting may have been in self-defense, though no official determination has been made. An autopsy for Soden was scheduled for February 2, 2026. The KBI expects to present its findings to the McPherson County Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed. Authorities have stated that they do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the community related to this incident.
