In the late afternoon of Sunday, February 1, 2026, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Casey's General Store in Fremont, Iowa. The incident resulted in the death of David Michael Dyke, a 45-year-old male from the nearby rural community of Rose Hill. Law enforcement was dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:20 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Dyke deceased from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect, Michael Joseph Lee, a 45-year-old resident of Fremont. An altercation between Dyke and Lee reportedly began inside the convenience store and escalated in the parking lot. According to court documents, after a verbal exchange inside the store, Dyke exited and sat in his vehicle. Lee followed a short time later, re-engaging with Dyke. A physical confrontation ensued, during which Lee allegedly fired multiple shots, with at least one striking Dyke and another hitting the store.
In the early hours of the following morning, at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Monday, February 2nd, Michael Joseph Lee was arrested at his residence on North Walnut Street in Fremont. He was taken into custody at the Mahaska County Law Enforcement Center and has been charged with Murder in the 1st Degree. During an interview with law enforcement, Lee claimed that Dyke was on top of him when he fired the revolver from his coat pocket. However, authorities have stated that physical evidence and witness statements contradict this account.
Following the incident, David Dyke's body was transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's office in Ankeny for an autopsy. Lee was booked into the Mahaska County Jail and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 11.
