In the early hours of New Year's Day 2026, the life of a promising 25-year-old Black / African American Dallas rapper, Zecqurie Cannon Grant Fields, known musically as Zeethewizard, was irrevocably altered. A celebration for the grand opening of the Pink House Dallas, an after-hours strip club, turned into a scene of violence when gunfire erupted in the parking lot at approximately 3:45 a.m.
Fields was critically injured in the shooting, which also wounded four other individuals.
Emergency services responded to the chaotic scene near Empire Central and North Stemmons Freeway, and the five victims were transported to a local hospital. For days, Fields remained in critical condition, fighting for his life. His family and friends held onto hope, asking for an end to public speculation about his condition. Tragically, on January 5, 2026, Zecqurie Fields succumbed to his injuries.
Fields, a Dallas native who most recently resided in west Oak Cliff, had turned to music after a sports injury derailed his athletic ambitions. He was a rising figure in the "New Dallas" rap scene, a collective of artists advocating for peace and unity. His music was gaining traction, and he was known for his positive message, encouraging others to remain hopeful even in difficult times. He was a father to two young daughters.
In the wake of the shooting, the Dallas Police Department began an investigation. On January 20, 2026, authorities announced an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting. The U.S. Marshals Task Force apprehended 26-year-old Dameian Roberson. Roberson has been charged with murder and was being held in the Dallas County jail. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by investigators.
