In the small town of Farmerville, Louisiana, the life of 18-year-old Kayane Deundrea Smith was cut tragically short on Friday, January 9, 2026. On that day, investigators with the Union Parish Sheriff's Office were called to Maple Street to assist with a reported battery. Upon their arrival, they made a grim discovery; a young male was found inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders immediately began life-saving measures.
Smith was quickly transported by Pafford EMS to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was later pronounced deceased. The investigation into the young man's death was quickly classified as a homicide. He was lost to gun violence, a fact that would soon ripple through the community.
The investigation into Smith's death led to a swift arrest. An 18-year-old female from the nearby town of Spearsville, Cynia Monet Gray, was taken into custody. During the course of the investigation, Gray admitted to shooting Smith, and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle at the scene. She was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder and booked into the Union Parish Detention Center. A Third Judicial District judge set her bond at $1,000,000. Funeral services for Kayane Smith were scheduled to be held at the Union Parish High School Gym.
