On the evening of January 12, 2026, a tragedy unfolded inside a Chipotle restaurant on the edge of Temple University's campus in North Philadelphia, abruptly ending the life of 16-year-old Khyon Smith-Tate. The restaurant, located on the 1100 block of West Montgomery Avenue, was bustling with the dinner rush as students and staff returned for the first day of the spring semester. Amidst the noise and activity, a fatal event was about to occur, largely unnoticed by the patrons.
Khyon, a student at Imhotep Institute Charter High School, was not a student at the university but was in the area with three other teenagers. He and at least one other minor requested the keys to the restroom and went inside. Shortly after, a single gunshot was fired from a semi-automatic weapon. However, due to the noisy environment and music playing in the restaurant, no one reported hearing the shot. It was a Chipotle employee who discovered Khyon in the bathroom, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:24 p.m. Investigators found one spent shell casing in the bathroom, but no weapon was recovered.
Philadelphia police are searching for three teenage suspects, believed to be between the ages of 16 and 17, in connection with the shooting. Detailed descriptions of the suspects have been released to the public in the hope of generating leads. One suspect is described as having dreadlocks and was last seen wearing a black coat, a pink hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, black sneakers, and carrying a red backpack. A second suspect was wearing a black coat, black jeans, and black sneakers, and was carrying a black backpack. The third suspect, who also has dreadlocks, was wearing a black coat, a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black sneakers, and was carrying a dark-colored backpack.
As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and a motive for the shooting has not been determined. Police sources have indicated that the other teenagers who were with Khyon have been identified and that they have had some level of contact with them. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragic death of the young high school student.
