In the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, a Sunday evening turned fatal for 19-year-old Angel Xavier Aviles, who was found shot and killed on January 18, 2026. The tragic discovery was made around 6:49 p.m. when a passerby noticed Aviles slumped over the wheel of his white Honda, which had crashed in the 5800 block of West Walton Street. Initially reported as a car crash, first responders from the Chicago Fire Department soon realized the grim reality of the situation: Aviles had sustained gunshot
wounds to his head and leg. He was immediately transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, it is estimated that Aviles was shot at approximately 6:30 p.m., about 19 minutes before law enforcement was dispatched to the scene of the crash. Reports indicate that after being shot, Aviles's vehicle collided with an unoccupied parked car before coming to a stop. While no 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area were received, a witness at the scene later recounted seeing two gunmen open fire after emerging from behind a tree. Another report mentioned that an unidentified man had walked up to Aviles's vehicle and opened fire.
As of now, the investigation into the shooting death of Angel Aviles is ongoing, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. Services for Aviles have been scheduled, with a visitation to be held on Monday, January 26th.
