A simmering dispute over a vape pen inside a popular Indiana tavern erupted into deadly violence, leaving a celebrated hotel manager dead just one day after his 30th birthday. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of December 1, 2025, at the Britton Tavern in Fishers, a community stunned by the rare act of violence. Justin Burton, a 30-year-old man from Noblesville, was shot and killed inside the establishment located near State Road 37 and East 141st Street.

The Fishers Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 2:45 a.m. and found Burton inside suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe the fatal encounter stemmed from an argument over a vape. Friends of Burton said he was at the bar celebrating his 30th birthday, which had been the day before. He was remembered as a respected manager at the Conrad Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, with a reputation for a strong work ethic and a warm, friendly demeanor.

A suspect, identified as 31-year-old Maclean Murt of Carmel, Indiana, was arrested at the tavern without incident. He remained at the scene after the shooting and was taken into custody by responding officers. According to court documents, Murt allegedly believed Burton had stolen his friend's vape. Murt, who was in a wheelchair, told police that when he confronted Burton, he was pushed and tipped over, at which point he admitted to shooting in Burton's direction.

Murt has since been formally charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with Burton's death. He is being held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail. The Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office will handle the prosecution of the case. Authorities have stated that they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
