On the evening of December 3, 2025, a tragedy unfolded at the Cadence Apartments along Scenic Highway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Donovan Hesiod Pugh, a 21-year-old male student from New Orleans, was inside his residence near 78th Avenue when the quiet of the complex was shattered. A sophomore at Southern University majoring in Criminal Justice, Donovan had recently experienced a security breach at his home; his apartment had been burglarized just days prior on Thanksgiving Day while he was
away. In response to that theft, he had legally purchased a shotgun to protect himself, fearing for his safety in a complex where his mother later noted residents had expressed concerns about violence.
Around 5:50 p.m., intruders kicked in the door of the apartment. According to accounts provided by his mother, Wendy Hansell-Pugh, Donovan was present this time and armed himself with his shotgun, commanding the intruders to leave. During the confrontation, the assailants, who also had weapons drawn, fired upon him. Investigators indicated that Donovan may have turned away at a critical moment before being fatally struck. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find him suffering from gunshot wounds, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the apartment.
The Baton Rouge Police Department launched a homicide investigation, describing the incident as a home invasion and armed robbery. Detectives used witness testimony and surveillance footage from the area to identify a potential suspect. The investigation led law enforcement to Clayton, Louisiana, a small town roughly 30 minutes from Natchez, Mississippi. On December 17, 2025, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended 20-year-old Zion Buck in connection with the slaying.
Following his arrest, Zion Buck was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faces serious charges including first-degree murder, home invasion, and armed robbery. While one suspect is in custody, authorities have stated that they believe other individuals were involved in the break-in and subsequent shooting. Police continue to seek additional suspects and have urged anyone with information regarding the other participants to come forward as the investigation remains active.
