On Dec. 13, 2025, Ella Cook, a 19-year-old woman, was killed when gunfire erupted inside a classroom on Brown University’s campus in Providence, Rhode Island. What began as an ordinary end-of-semester Saturday collapsed into panic as students scattered and called for help; nine other people were wounded as the campus and surrounding streets filled with sirens and flashing lights.
In the days that followed, the details of Cook’s life came into focus through the people who loved her most. Officials and friends described her as a Brown sophomore from Alabama, and her home church in Birmingham spoke about her steady faith and the way she lifted others up. An obituary shared by her family painted a portrait of someone remembered for a quiet smile, an openness to new places and challenges, and a kind, encouraging presence that seemed to travel with her wherever she went.
While candles gathered at memorials and students prepared to leave for winter break, investigators chased fragments: released images, tips, and sightings that never quite aligned. A manhunt pushed outward beyond Providence, and at one point authorities publicly discussed a “person of interest,” only for the state’s attorney general to say there was no basis to keep treating that person as such. The uncertainty stretched for days, fed by new photos and pleas for information and reward money as police insisted the search was still active.
The search ended not with a courtroom arraignment, but at a New Hampshire storage facility. Authorities said the suspected shooter, Claudio Neves Valente—a former Brown graduate student and Portuguese national—was found dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators said they believed Valente acted alone and that the same suspect was also responsible for the killing of MIT physics professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at Loureiro’s Brookline home two days after the Brown attack; with the suspect dead, there were no arrests to announce, no charges to file, and no trial to bring answers in the usual way.
Investigators later described how the case cracked: encounters with Valente that prompted a crucial tip, a vehicle trail that helped reveal a name, and a web of camera and license-plate data that tracked movement across state lines—along with the gaps that made the escape possible, including limited camera coverage in the older part of the engineering building where the attack happened. In the aftermath, the scrutiny widened beyond the shooter to the university’s security posture, with Brown placing its campus police chief on leave amid reviews of policies and campus access.
