On December 20, 2025, a tragic incident occurred on private property near Lexington, North Carolina, resulting in the untimely death of 40-year-old Zachary Wilson Cash. A male resident of the area, Cash was participating in a deer hunting expedition with a hunting partner during the morning hours. The two individuals had separated to cover different areas of the woods, positioning themselves approximately 120 yards apart.
Cash was reportedly moving through the terrain in an attempt to drive deer toward his companion when the fatal error took place.
According to investigators from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the hunting partner observed movement in the brush and, mistaking the source for a coyote, discharged a firearm. The single gunshot struck Cash, who was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The shooting was reported around 10 a.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities and wildlife officials who secured the area to determine the nature of the event.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain if any criminal negligence or intent was involved. Officials ultimately determined that the shooting was a heartbreaking accident with no evidence of foul play or intentional wrongdoing found. Consequently, no suspects were pursued, and no arrests were made in connection with the death. Zachary Cash was a well-known figure in his community, having served previously as a Lexington police officer and a deputy with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. At the time of his passing, he was active as a softball coach for North Davidson Middle School and served as an elder at the First Alliance Church. He left behind a wife and three children, along with a legacy defined by his mentorship and service to the families in his district.
