On the night of November 26, 2025, Eddie Washington Jr., a 40-year-old man from Syracuse, was fatally shot on the city’s Near Westside. Police later confirmed that he was the victim found outside the James Geddes Housing complex after a burst of gunfire was detected in the neighborhood. Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Tully Street at about 9:36 p.m. in response to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple shots fired.
When first responders arrived, they discovered Washington near 317 Tully Street, unconscious and not breathing, suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Emergency medical crews worked to stabilize him and transported him to Upstate University Hospital, the region’s major trauma center. Despite those efforts, Washington was pronounced dead at the hospital. The severity and location of his injuries, combined with the fact that he was unresponsive when officers reached him, underscored how sudden and violent the attack had been. The scene around the housing complex was described as chaotic, with shell casings and damage indicating that more than one round had been fired during the incident.
In addition to striking Washington, the gunfire also hit two vehicles in the area, showing that the shots were not limited to a single, close-range target and raising concerns about the risk to other residents in the densely populated complex. As officers and crime scene technicians worked, Tully Street was shut down from Wyoming Street to Tioga Street for several hours overnight so investigators could document evidence, photograph the scene, and canvass the area for witnesses or security camera footage that might show what led up to the shooting.
As of the information publicly reported so far, police have not announced any arrests in connection with Washington’s killing, nor have they released the name of a suspect or a possible motive. Detectives are treating the case as an active homicide investigation and have appealed directly to the community for help.
