In the late hours of November 22, 2025, Everett Nunn, a 58-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by a police officer inside his Evansville, Indiana, home. The tragic encounter unfolded after police responded to a 911 hang-up call originating from the residence, where a dispatcher could hear sounds of a disturbance. The caller eventually reported that her husband and son were on the verge of a physical altercation.
Upon arrival, the responding officer was met by a woman outside who
indicated that someone was 'going to jail' and that there was a firearm in the house. The officer then entered the home and, within moments, encountered Everett Nunn holding a dark object. The officer commanded Nunn to 'drop it' before discharging his weapon six times. Nunn was struck by the gunfire and was subsequently transported to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
It was later determined that the object in Nunn's possession was not a firearm but a smoking device designed to look like one. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, others in the room with Nunn informed the officer that the item was not a real gun. The officer who fired the fatal shots, a member of the Evansville Police Department since 2021 with prior law enforcement experience, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
