On a Monday afternoon, November 17, 2025, in Jackson, Mississippi, 19-year-old Lawrence McElroy Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot in what police described as a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred around 1:35 p.m. as McElroy was stepping out of his home in the 3200 block of Tougaloo Street.
According to investigators, a silver Hyundai Sonata carrying three Black males drove by McElroy's residence and opened fire. He was struck multiple times.
The suspects immediately fled the scene after the shooting. The Hinds County coroner confirmed that McElroy died from his wounds on the same day, and his death was ruled a homicide. Family members who gathered at the scene expressed their grief and shock, with one aunt describing the loss as 'horrible' and 'tragic.'
In the days following the shooting, the Jackson Police Department actively investigated the case. On November 21, 2025, authorities arrested 33-year-old Fredrick Wright in connection with the homicide. Wright has been charged with the murder of Lawrence McElroy Jr.
During his initial court appearance on November 24, 2025, a Municipal Court Judge denied bond for Wright. In addition to the murder charge, he also faces charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a machine gun conversion device. The investigation into the death of Lawrence McElroy Jr. remains ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
