In the quiet hours of an October morning in Mesa, Arizona, a long life came to a tragic and unexpected end. Katharine Woolums, a 93-year-old woman, was living with her husband of many years, 92-year-old Jerome Woolums, at a senior care facility where they were both receiving medical care. The staff at the group home on West Mendoza Avenue were met with a grim discovery in the couple's bedroom on October 16, 2025, a scene that would unravel a story of desperation and violence.
Police were
called to the facility shortly after 4 a.m. with a report that two residents had been shot. Inside the room, they found Jerome and Katharine with gunshot wounds. Jerome was pronounced dead at the scene, with a handgun found in his possession, suggesting a self-inflicted wound. Katharine, however, was still alive, though gravely injured.
