Terrell L. Jones, a 32-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on March 17, 2018, in Chicago, IL. Jones, an employee of the Streets and Sanitation Department, was riding in an SUV driven by his 27-year-old cousin when they were ambushed by two men armed with assault rifles. The assailants opened fire, striking Jones multiple times.
He succumbed to his injuries, while his cousin, who was also wounded, managed to survive and seek help at the Englewood District police station.
The investigation into Jones' murder revealed that the attack was carried out by members of the La Raza street gang. Albaro Guerrero-Garcia, a 20-year-old gang member, was indicted for his role in the murder. Guerrero-Garcia was accused of driving the gunmen around the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood in a Chevrolet Equinox. The gunmen, who have not been apprehended, opened fire on Jones and his cousin at a red traffic light. The Equinox was later set on fire, and investigators recovered 23 shell casings from the scene.
Jones' family believes that the attack was a case of mistaken identity. They were only in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood to save time on their way home after encountering traffic on the Eisenhower Expressway. The family has been praying for the gunmen to be taken into custody and brought to justice. Despite the arrest of Guerrero-Garcia, the investigation remains ongoing, and the gunmen responsible for Jones' death have yet to be charged.
