Jamie Windom, 16, a teenage boy from Lufkin, was shot on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in the 100 block of Percy Simond Street near the Pinewood Park Apartments. He was first taken to Woodland Heights Medical Center and then flown to a Houston hospital, where he died early Thursday morning. Police said the gunfire struck his legs, and he succumbed to those injuries after being transferred for advanced care.
The case swiftly shifted from a shooting investigation to a homicide after his death.
Lufkin police arrested 26-year-old Julious Jamal Griffin the night of the shooting; he was located by officers near the Brookshire Brothers warehouse. Griffin initially faced charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon. After the teenager’s death, investigators upgraded the case to murder, noting that an autopsy determined the injuries from gunshots to the legs caused the fatality.
Griffin told police he fired in self-defense, claiming the teenager and others had robbed him at gunpoint. However, according to investigators who reviewed surveillance footage, the video contradicted that account: it showed Griffin pursuing the fleeing boy with a rifle and firing as the teen ran. Those details, along with the medical examiner’s findings, underpinned the murder charge sought by detectives as they continued building the case.
By the end of that week, authorities described the investigation as active and ongoing while Griffin remained in the Angelina County Jail. Police communications emphasized that detectives were following up on leads tied to the June 17 shooting scene outside the apartment complex, moving the case from the initial emergency response toward a fuller account of what led to Jamie Windom, 16, a Lufkin boy, being gunned down on a summer evening.
