Caylen Fritz, 22, a Black male, was spending the long holiday weekend in Dallas’ Deep Ellum when a late-night dispute between two groups spilled across a Canton Street parking lot and erupted into gunfire. Around 2:20–2:25 a.m. on July 5, 2025, officers were flagged down near South Good Latimer Expressway as panicked crowds ran from the scene. Police found multiple victims and a chaotic tangle of shell casings and discarded weapons.
Fritz, struck by several rounds amid the melee, was pulled from the pavement as officers and bystanders scrambled for cover and aid. He was taken from the 2600 block of Canton Street to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
What happened in those frantic minutes became clearer days later when Dallas police released body-camera footage: as officers arrived, they encountered 19-year-old Tevin Valentine standing over Fritz with a handgun. Commands to drop the weapon were shouted above the sirens; Valentine ran and, according to police, pointed the gun toward an officer, who fired a single rifle shot that brought him down. Valentine survived his wound, and investigators later said the gun he held had been reported stolen. The footage underscored the confusion of a scene that had already left Fritz mortally wounded and others injured before the police ever opened fire.
Detectives traced the violence to a night of simmering altercations between two groups that escalated into an exchange of shots shortly after the bars let out. Within days, the investigation yielded a break. On July 9, 2025, the Dallas Police Fugitive Unit arrested 19-year-old Gael Aguilar in connection with Fritz’s killing.
