In the summer of 2025, the city of Roanoke, Virginia, was rocked by a tragic event that unfolded within a home on 7th Street NW. On the evening of June 28th, police were dispatched to the residence following reports of a shooting. Inside, they discovered the body of 55-year-old Israel Calloway, a Black/African American male, who had been fatally shot.
The grim discovery marked the beginning of a swift and intense investigation into his death.
Authorities quickly identified a person of interest in the case: Israel Calloway's own son, 24-year-old Rayjuan Antonio Calloway. A search for the younger Calloway was immediately launched, with law enforcement believing he might be driving a white Honda Accord. The search for Rayjuan extended beyond the city limits of Roanoke, and the following morning, he was spotted by a police officer in Prince Edward County. A tense confrontation ensued, during which Rayjuan allegedly fired at the officer before fleeing the scene.
This brazen act prompted a large-scale manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the safety of residents in the area as officers scoured the vicinity for the armed suspect. The search culminated in the afternoon when Rayjuan Calloway was located and taken into custody without further incident near Route 460 and Sulpher Spring Road.
Following his arrest, Rayjuan Antonio Calloway was charged with the second-degree murder of his father, Israel Calloway. In connection with the confrontation with law enforcement during the manhunt, he also faced a charge of attempted capital murder. The series of events left a community in mourning and a family torn apart by violence.
