Evie Joe Omps, a 52-year-old White male from Winchester, Virginia, died on September 23, 2025, after a violent encounter inside a pickup truck on Quarry Road in Bunker Hill, West Virginia. Shortly after noon, at approximately 12:06 p.m., deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Criminal Investigative Division were sent to the area after someone reported suspicious circumstances.
When deputies arrived, they found a red Chevrolet Silverado containing three deceased people. Omps was inside the truck along with two other Winchester residents, Dalton Weaver and Darion Clevenger. All three had suffered gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly moved away from the possibility that the three had simply been discovered together after an unrelated outside attack. According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office account reported by local news organizations, detectives believed an altercation had taken place among the occupants inside the truck and that the confrontation escalated into gunfire. Investigators determined during the preliminary investigation that one of the three deceased individuals appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities did not publicly identify which man they believed inflicted that wound on himself, nor did they publicly establish the precise sequence of the shootings or state who fired each of the shots that killed the other occupants.
The circumstances consequently left important questions unanswered about exactly what happened during the final moments inside the Chevrolet Silverado. Authorities described the incident as an apparent dispute or altercation, but publicly available reports did not provide a motive, explain what the men had been doing together before the confrontation, or disclose what caused the argument to become deadly. Reports published in the immediate aftermath said autopsies were pending through the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office, while investigators continued gathering evidence and information about the events leading to the gunfire.
Despite the violent nature of the scene, investigators said there was no indication that an unidentified gunman had escaped. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office specifically reported that there were no outstanding suspects and no continuing threat to the public. That assessment, combined with investigators’ belief that one of the fatal wounds was self-inflicted, indicated that authorities were concentrating on the three occupants of the truck rather than searching for an outside assailant. However, law enforcement did not publicly name any of the deceased men as the shooter responsible for the deaths of the others, so assigning that role to Omps, Weaver, or Clevenger would go beyond what investigators publicly established.
Omps had deep ties to Winchester. He was born there in 1973, graduated from James Wood High School, and worked as a technician’s assistant at Gills Heating and Air Conditioning. His obituary described him as calm, cautious and loyal, and said he enjoyed helping his aunts with their horses and riding them. His parents were identified as Darwyn and Mary Clevenger, and the obituary also identified Darion Clevenger, who died alongside him in the Bunker Hill shooting, as his brother. The deaths therefore struck the same family twice in a single incident. A memorial gathering for Omps was held at Omps Funeral Home’s Amherst Chapel in Winchester on October 10, 2025.
No arrest was announced in the publicly available reporting located on the case, and there is no reported prosecution, criminal trial or conviction connected with Omps’s death. That is consistent with the Sheriff’s Office statement that investigators did not believe there was an outstanding suspect. The case nevertheless remained described as under investigation in the reports following the discovery, and authorities asked anyone with relevant information to contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and speak with Deputy Jenkins. Public reporting has not identified which of the three men suffered the self-inflicted wound or provided a definitive reconstruction establishing who shot whom, leaving the exact roles of the three men in the fatal confrontation publicly unresolved.
