Jorge Espejo Gudino, 26, male, Hispanic/Latino, was shot in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the Casa Del Sol apartments along the 7800 block of Callaghan Road on San Antonio’s Northwest Side. Police were dispatched around 2 a.m. to a “shooting in progress.” Officers found Espejo near the complex’s main entrance with a gunshot wound; he was transported to a hospital where he later died.
A second man, identified as Jose Gregorio Yañez-Nava, was also fatally shot during the same burst of violence at the complex. The attack unfolded in the parking area, jolting residents awake and scattering bystanders as gunfire echoed through the courtyard.
Investigators quickly pieced together a stark sequence captured in surveillance video and corroborated by witnesses. According to an arrest affidavit summarized by local outlets, a red sedan pulled into the lot and the driver opened fire, striking Espejo and prompting him to run. As the car sped away, Yañez-Nava hurled rocks at the vehicle. The driver stopped, got out, chased the second man, and shot him as well before fleeing. Detectives later matched shell casings from the scene to casings recovered in an unrelated incident involving the same suspect and noted damage on the red Mitsubishi Lancer that was consistent with broken glass at the apartment complex.
Within days, San Antonio police arrested 54-year-old Joe John Perez in connection with the double homicide. He was booked on capital murder charges, with reports noting bail set at $800,000 as the case moved forward. Authorities linked Perez to the red sedan seen on video and identified by witnesses, and said the shooting occurred shortly after 2 a.m. that Sunday. The swift arrest offered a measure of resolution for a community shaken by the attack, even as detectives continued to process evidence and prepare the case for prosecution.
Public tributes soon followed, with online memorials marking Espejo’s name and the date and place where his life was taken. The entries sit alongside calls for anyone with additional information to cooperate with authorities, as the legal process advances against the lone suspect now in custody.
