In the pre-dawn hours of August 21, 2025, a sense of unease settled over a quiet neighborhood in Hartford, Vermont. A disturbance at a home on Verna Court prompted a 911 call around 3:50 a.m., shattering the morning's tranquility. When officers from the Hartford Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau. Inside the residence, 65-year-old David Labrecque of Canaan, New Hampshire, a male, had been fatally shot.
A second individual, Jessica Lemay, 36, also from Canaan, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was immediately transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment of what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Vermont State Police and the Hartford Police Department, quickly determined that this was not a random act of violence but rather an isolated incident. By the following day, their efforts led to the apprehension of three individuals in connection with the deadly shooting. Demetrius Drew, 30, of New Haven, Connecticut, was identified as the alleged gunman and taken into custody. He faced charges of first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Two other individuals, Jeffrey Mullins, 46, and his wife, Michelle Mullins, 48, both of Rindge, New Hampshire, were also arrested. They were each charged with being an accessory before the fact. Investigators believe the motive for the home invasion was robbery. All three suspects were ordered to be held without bail pending their arraignment in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in White River Junction. The swift arrests brought a measure of resolution to a community shaken by the sudden violence, though the investigation into the full circumstances of David Labrecque's death continued.
