In the late summer evening of August 6, 2025, in Athens, Tennessee, the life of 17-year-old Matthew 'Matt Matt' Devon Isaiah Rackley, a male, was tragically cut short by gun violence. The shooting, which authorities later described as a targeted attack, also left another man wounded. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of Tell Street and Howard Street, prompting a significant law enforcement response.
The Athens Police Department quickly identified Carlos Quintana as a person of
interest in the fatal shooting. An intensive manhunt ensued, leading to the implementation of security measures at local schools, including those in Athens City and McMinn County, as a precautionary measure while the search for the armed and dangerous suspect was underway. Investigators revealed that Quintana was a convicted felon with a history of probation violations and a prior arrest for attempted robbery.
A multi-agency effort involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and local sheriff's departments culminated in the capture of Carlos Quintana at a residence in neighboring Bradley County. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Quintana fleeing the scene of the shooting. While Quintana was taken into custody, authorities announced that they had also identified a second suspect in the case, though this individual's name was not publicly released.
