A man is shot to death during an apparent robbery Everett Delano, a 49-year-old Navy veteran, was fatally shot on September 1, 1966, during a robbery at Sanborn's Garage in Andover, New Hampshire, where he worked as a gas station attendant. Delano was found by customers lying in a pool of blood with three gunshot wounds to the head. He was still alive when discovered but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Approximately $100 was stolen from the cash register, though a more substantial sum remained hidden nearby.
Despite initial investigative efforts, including forensic testing and witness interviews, the case went cold for decades. It wasn't until 2013, when a member of Delano's family requested a review of the case, that the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation. Using modern forensic methods, fingerprints found at the crime scene were linked to Thomas Cass, a Vermont resident with an extensive criminal record. Cass, who was 20 at the time of the murder, denied involvement when questioned but took his own life in 2014, shortly after police confronted him with evidence tying him to the crime.
The resolution of Delano's murder, nearly 53 years after the event, provided some closure for his family, who had long sought answers regarding the brutal killing.
